Dominique's favorite picks for everything fun & tasty in New York, New York.
**Best Mac & Cheese* *
If you're craving mac & cheese, SMAC will satisfy. A diversity of styles, from basic to fancy, fits the needs of all mac & cheese lovers, even those with a more sophisticated palate. The bright orange walls might remind you of the boxed flavor of your youth (or present, depending on how talented you are in the kitchen). You'll find that it seems to be just that shade of orange that sets off a Pavlovian response making it hard not to drool on the display.
**Best Ramen**
The first and only location outside of Japan of this fantastic Ramen restaurant. Their specialty is the Shio Ramen (salt-based) which is perfectly balanced with their tasty grilled pork.
You can tell it's good by the number of Japanese diners inside!
**Best Burger: Shack Burger**
It's hard to choose a best burger place in NYC, but Shake Shack's burgers are perfectly seasoned and atop the moistest bun which provides for the most melt-in-your-mouth burger.
Pair that with outdoor seating and frozen custard and I'm in heaven! (count your lucky stars if you're there for salted caramel frozen custard day!)
**Best Red Velvet Cupcake**
My favorite cupcake in NYC: a delightfully moist cake with a hint of chocolate topped with the tastiest cream cheese frosting.
**Best Dumplings**
Choose from a variety of dumplings and have them fried or steamed, in soup, or just by themselves with dipping sauce. Make sure to try the watermelon-ade and the chocolate dessert dumpling (but be careful to avoid the squirting chocolate!)
**Best Dessert**
Chikalicious makes a prix fixe 3-course meal out of dessert. What's not to love? Here you'll find an incredible balance of delicate Japanese techniques applied to true American tastes in each of their desserts. From cheesecake that tastes like it could be made out of a cloud to sorbet that tastes like you're taking a bite out of an apple, you'll definitely find something to suit any sweet tooth here.
Tips: No parties greater than 4 and come early- they don't accept reservations. Check the website for days and hours of operation.
**Best Concert Venue**
See up-and-coming artists in this beautiful (in the grungy east village sense) & intimate live music venue. Come early and snag a table in the upstairs balcony. If the bouncer asks if you're with the band, just say yes ;)
**Best Dance Music**
For the ultimate girls night out, come to Bella's, the bar below Bar Martignetti. You'll have a DJ spinning oldies and 80s music to scream along to and the mass of preppy boys makes for a non-intimidating crowd.
**Best Grocery Shopping**
The only Trader Joe's in the city! Get cheap wine in the wine store and fresh & cheap produce as well as tasty frozen meals in the grocery store.
**Best Pho**
Clean, efficient, and serving perfectly seasoned broth makes for the best bowl of pho in the city. Don't forget to get your cafe sua da (iced coffee)!
You're getting pho advice from a girl who's had pho for lunch practically every saturday since she was a little girl. go there. it's that good.
**Best Bar**
So it's hard to say that there's a best bar in NYC since there are so many...but at Ace bar, you can chill with your friends in an anything-goes environment and max & relax playing skee ball (yes! think chucky cheese's for adults), darts, pool, and buck hunter.
**Best Tacos**
Tasty little tacos can be found in this tiny restaurant, celebrated for their fish tacos. It's also one of the few places you'll find tacos al pastor, a spicy pork and pineapple explosion in your mouth! Make sure to pair your tacos with their homemade salsas and creative margaritas!
**Best Outdoors Activity**
Whether I'm in the mood for driving golf balls, taking a sunset sail, or just grabbing a locally brewed beer on a waterside patio, I know I can find it at Chelsea Piers
**Best All-you-can-drink Brunch**
This is absolutely my go-to spot for a plate of perfectly poached eggs benedict topped with delectable hollandaise sauce. Pair it with their all-you-can-drink mimosa special and you've got yourself a $15 buzz...i mean, meal.
**Best Fried Chicken and Waffles**
Yes, that's right. Straight from Bobby Flay Throw Down celebrity, Melba makes the most light and fluffy, crispy-on-the-outside & chewy-on-the-inside egg nog waffles topped with strawberry butter to go on the side of her delectably crispy fried chicken. YUM!
**Best Rooftop**
From the rooftop of 230 Fifth, you can sip a cocktail and have an unobstructed view of the Empire State Building. Just perfect. --
The crowd isn't my favorite, but get the early for a quick happy hour and you'll be impressed...just leave before the velvet ropes come out.--
**Best Gelato**
I can now say that I've traveled to Italy and I can't deny that their hazelnut gelato tastes just like eating a handful of hazelnuts and their peach gelato tastes like taking a bite out of a smooth frozen peach!
**Best Gelato**
I can now say that I've traveled to Italy and I can't deny that their hazelnut gelato tastes just like eating a handful of hazelnuts and their peach gelato tastes like taking a bite out of a smooth frozen peach!
**Best French Onion Soup Dumplings**
That's right...take the deliciousness of french onion soup and stick it in a wonton wrapper and top with cheese and a crouton. The small plates here are all pretty good, but make sure you don't miss out on the onion soup dumplings!
**Best place to sit on a blanket**
Not necessarily the cafe, but Sheep Meadow is the best place in Central Park to set down your picnic blanket with a couple of friends and kick pack. No organized sports allowed, but no rules against tossing a football or a frisbee. This is also an excellent place for people-watching in the summer!
**Best Banh Mi**
That's right...they make vietnamese sandwiches right, starting with the perfectly baked crusty-on-the-outside and oh-so-soft on the inside french baguettes. My favorite is the Banh Mi saigon with pork, pickled veggies, extra cilantro, and a little bit of mayo...hold the jalepenos!
dominique loves sushi from natsumi!
